Sports Massage Therapy is the manual manipulation of muscle fibers used to manage and prevent injuries, particularly in athletes.
It is a common way to treat muscle spasms caused in day to day life.
A sports massage therapist uses techniques to sort through and smooth out muscle fibers in order to allow the muscle group to function more optimally.
Sports massage sessions typically range from 45 minutes to one hour in duration.
The benefits of Sports Massage Therapy are notably:
- Release and easing of muscle spasms
- Prevention and management of sports injuries
- Increase in flexibility and range of motion
- Improved sporting performance
A common question asked is how often should a person go for a sports massage?
Depending on what your physical abilities and needs are, I recommend the following as a guide:
Sedentary lifestyle, occasionally active and carries tension throughout the body:
Once to twice a month.
Active, participates in occasional events:
Once to twice a month, atleast weekly for one month leading up to an event.
Very active, athletic, training falls part of a periodised program
Twice a month in off season, once a week for 8-12 weeks before main event and once weekly for 4-6 weeks post event.
In other words,
Maintenance: Once or twice a month.
Event build up: Once weekly for 2-4 weeks pre-event.
Post event: Once weekly for 4-6 weeks then follow a maintenance program.
